Facts About Geranium Macrorrhizum


There are many types of geraniums and one of the loveliest is the geranium macrorrhizum. This plant produces delicate looking lavender flowers.  One of the reasons that geraniums are so popular is that they are fairly easy to care for and are hardy enough to withstand the mistakes of beginners.

That fact makes geraniums, such as the geranium macrorrhizum a favorite, even among those who may have a bit of a black thumb. There are other reasons that they are well loved.  

For the most part, geraniums are best as indoor plants. Of course, some varieties are wonderful choices for use in outdoor beds, but that depends not only on the type of geranium, but also the region in which you live.

If you live in a colder climate, you will do best keeping your geraniums indoors. Some people who live in a colder climate enjoy using geranium macrorrhizum as outdoor hanging plants during the warmer months. They hang them from their porch and are able to enjoy them as outdoor plants several months out of the year.

Then, when the weather begins to turn cold, they can easily move their plants inside and keep them going strong over the winter.

The blooms on a geranium macrorrhizum are quite long lasting. Under ideal conditions, the blooms may last six months or more.

If you do want to grow this plant outdoors, here are some things to keep in mind.

You will to be sure that the soil drains well, and the plant should be placed in full sun. While the geranium macrorrhizum is able to withstand heat much better than some other geraniums, it will still do better in partial shade than in full light.

Another nice feature of the geranium macrorrhizum is that they require far less trimming and cutting than do other types of geraniums. In fact, the only trimming you will need to do is to remove the flowering stems. Failing to remove these stems may result in propagation in some cases.

If you notice some of the leaves begin to yellow, it is fine to remove them in order to keep the plant looking its best.  Other than that, no trimming or cutting is required which helps to make this a fairly low maintenance plant.

Another great feature of the geranium macrorrhizum is that they are not prone to be infested or affected by disease or pests.

With no cutting, trimming, pests or diseases to worry about, once this plant takes root you need only make sure to provide adequate water.

This perennial plant is easy to grow and maintain and provides lovely and long lasting blooms. As mentioned above, if you live in a colder climate, you may need to grow indoors, but the geranium macrorrhizum will work well outdoors in warmer climates.

If you are able to grow the plant outdoors, you will have the added benefit of being able to attract butterflies. The geranium macrorrhizum is wonderful for this purpose and the butterflies will make your spring garden that much more colorful.

Consider adding geranium macrorrhizum either as addition to your indoor décor or your outdoor landscaping.
